Rates, currencies and profit-taking
Higher real interest rates can make interest-bearing assets more attractive. Dollar strength, weaker demand and profit-taking can also pressure gold, but no single factor determines its price.
EUR and USD may diverge
A stronger euro can lower the EUR quote even when USD gold is stable. Check the currency and period rather than drawing conclusions from a single day.
An exchange-rate example
Imagine gold stays at $2,000 per ounce. At $1 per euro, that is €2,000; at $1.10 per euro, it is about €1,818.18. The EUR quote falls about 9.09% without a fall in the USD quote. This example is not a description of today's market.
